The word ikat is from the Malay-Indonesian verb “mengikat,” meaning to tie, knot, or bind, because of the resist-dyeing technique that’s used to create patterns in fabric. In ikat textiles, the woven fabric is not dyed; rather, the yarn itself is resist-dyed before the ikat weaving—unlike other resist-dyeing methods such as shibori in Japan
